NAUGHTY
MARIETTA (1935)
Naughty Marietta was the singing duo's
first film together
and one of their most popular. On this
website you can click
through all the song pages for every major
song from this operetta.
Tramp!
Tramp! Tramp!
Music by Victor Herbert,
Lyrics by Rida Johnson Young
From the Operetta
Naughty
Marietta (1910)
This famous men's
marching song is a rousing beginning
to a great operetta,
as Captain Dick's men rescue
damsels in distress
and impress them with their prowess

'Neath
The Southern Moon

Italian
Street Song
Music By Victor Herbert,
Lyrics by Rida Johnson Young
From the Operetta
Naughty
Marietta (1910)
Once again, Nelson's
character belts out this
tune to impress
Jeanette's character in the film,
only to be shocked
when she begins singing it as well,
revealing her lovely
voice to him for the first time.

I'm
Falling In Love With Someone
Music by Victor Herbert,
Lyrics by Rida Johnson Young
From the Operetta
Naughty
Marietta (1910)
Nelson sings this
love song in a small boat to Jeanette,

with someone else.

Ah!
Sweet Mystery Of Life
Music By Victor Herbert,
Lyrics by Rida Johnson Young
From the Operetta
Naughty
Marietta (1910)
This song is the
"Dream Melody" that has few words,
until the characters
declare their love for one
another towards
the end of the story - then the words
come pouring forth
as if by magic.

ROSE MARIE (1935)
I had three beautiful song pages up from
this show
but had to take them down years ago for
copyright law extension reasons.
You can thank the unConstitutional Sonny
Bono Copyright Extension
law signed by Clinton in 1998, that keeps
the public from their Public Domain
on old works until 2018. If anyone else
has songs from this show up on
their site they are copyright infringing.
Jeanette did sing an aria from the opera
Romeo and Juliette
near the beginning of the film. You can
find it in Melody Lane's
Opera
Section.
MAYTIME (1937)
Probably the most polished of all the Nelson
Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald films
Will
You Remember
(The
Sweetheart Solo)
Lyrics by Rida Johnson
Young, Music by Sigmund Romberg
Original Publication
by G. Schirmer, 3 East 43rd St., NY (1917)
This much-loved romantic
duet comes from the operetta Maytime
and was popularized
by Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy
in the film of the
same name

Carry
Me Back To Old Virginny
Words and Music by
James A. Bland (1878)
A favorite Southern
plantation song.
Jeanette MacDonald
and Nelson Eddy sang this song together
at the piano in
Maytime

THE
NEW MOON (1938)
Unavailable online
for copyright law extension reasons.
Next time don't
let the politicians rob you of your public domain.
Fight back! Ancient
old works should belong to everyone.
SWEETHEARTS
(1938)
The couple's only film in color, it featured
a light and breezy
romantic score and dialogue...and Nelson
was happy to wear a modern suit
and clothes in this one! :)
Sweethearts
Music by Victor Herbert, Lyrics by Robert
B Smith
From the 2 Act Comedy Operetta Sweethearts
(1913)
This beautiful theme song was sung - several
times - by
Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald in
the 1938
film of the same name. A variation of
Victor Herbert's operetta was featured
in the film; the characters played a husband
and wife team who had
appeared in a successful run of the show
for several years...
much much longer than the actual operetta
had run on Broadway.

Selections from Operetta
The Merry Widow
Music by Franz Lehar, Original English
Lyrics by Adrian Ross
(1905-1907)
Unfortunately removed due to stupid copyright
lawsuit threat
awhile ago from the Franz Lehar estate,
ridiculous, when this
work is 100 years old! It's public domain
in the US but not UK / Europe.
I spent months working on this file, only
to be forced to remove it
after three weeks. Sigh. One day I'll
return it though. :)
From Smilin' Through,
Starring Jeanette and Husband Gene Raymond
Smilin'
Through
Words and Music by Arthur A. Penn (1918)
Composer of "The Honeysuckle And The Bee"
A terrific ballad standard, recorded by
many of the top crooners
of the first half of the twentieth century
Melody Lane MP3
From San Francisco (1936)
The
Holy City
Words by F.E. Weatherly,
Music by Stephen Adams
Publication: New York: Boosey & Co., 9 East Seventeenth Street (1892)
Jeanette sang this
inspiring song with boys' choir
in the 1936 film
musical blockbuster San Francisco
starring Clark Gable
and Spencer Tracy
